My Shot of the Day: Feeding on the Lilac Bushes

I’m finally back and nearly home. I’ll have more from France and Finland in the coming weeks. It is spring time in Colorado. Fabulous.

I shot this hungry guy this morning on my father’s lilac bushes in Pueblo, Colorado.  He/she is a Vanessa cardui, a very common butterfly, known as the Painted Lady in Europe, or the Cosmopolitan in North America.

After breakfast I hit the last leg of the trip – the drive to Taos and a reunion with my kids. I cant wait.

Very nice! I dig the colors, and the shallow depth of field. Zoom lens or macro lens (micro)?

John Mata I took it with my normal lens actually. The key here was patience. I waited quite awhile and inched closer bit by bit until I was right up close.

Another great shot. I've been stalking butterflies for a week and can't get a darned thing!

It took awhile to get the shot. They had to get used to me being around.
