Taos Mountain Balloon Rally 2012
The 2012 Taos Mountain Balloon Rally kicked off early Friday morning (Oct. 26) here in my town of Taos, New Mexico with a select group of invitational pilots and their massive envelopes. It was damn chilly and the wind kept them from doing much but Saturday morning we got the full treat as they climbed into Taos’ chilly autumnal skies just as the sun begins to rise. Here are 11 shots from Saturday morning. Enjoy!
This year marked the 30th anniversary of the rally.
Ralph Sweet of General Rental in Taos has been involved since the very beginning in 1982. “The Taos rally was started by the same folks who started the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta,” he said. “They spent so much time working the event in Albuquerque that they themselves didn’t have time to fly. So, after they were done down there they all started coming up to Taos to fly for fun and relaxation,” he told me.
