Sunset in Finland – Vesijärvi
Sunset in Finland west of Lahti.
In all the years I’ve spent in Finland I’ve never known the nights to be white. Summer sunset in Finland are more….red or pink as the fog moves throught the trees and catches the slanted summer light. Here is one of my favorite lakes in Finland. Vesijärvi:
This irregularly shaped lake is made up of several basins connected by narrows and shoals….
…
The lake is a nesting spot for more than 100 species of bird, with the great crested grebe, the black coot, and the black-headed gull the most numerous among them.
Lake Vesijärvi also hosts Finland’s largest bittern population. Five areas designated as nature reserves or Natura 2000 areas for the protection of water birds are found along its shores.
Lake Vesijärvi is also rich in fish. Suitable fi sh species have been introduced for recreational fi shing and to keep populations of the less valued roach species down. Species important for recreational fishing include pike, pike-perch, perch, and whitefish….Lake Vesijärvi is particularly rich in aquatic plants and home to many threatened plant species, such as the Shetland pondweed and various Najas species.
….
The Lake Vesijärvi Foundation
is a unique Finnish initiative that combines public and private resources to secure funding for research, maintenance, and management efforts focusing on Lake Vesijärvi and its catchment area.
The foundation also works to improve the general public’s awareness of Lake Vesijärvi and its condition and to promote all efforts to improve its water quality.
